Discription
Digitizing is taking a word or an image and making it into a format that the current machine (embroidery or other) can read it and see it as movements of certain directions of various parts. The software needed to do the digitizing does not always come with the normal functions that people expect it to have.
Process
Many times the process of digitizing is redrawing the image that was given or trying to download a vector version of said image. if it only contains wording then it is to try and match the font used with an existing font. Both of these processes can be done by most software automatically but the quality that you receive doing it in that manner might not always be the nicest. Here is a small easy sample of what happens if you rely on software to Auto digitize a simple logo in white and taking your time to do it correctly:

Sizing of design
To visualize the right size of any embroidery design is quite a task. There are allot of factors that will alter what your design might look like as embroidery.
Key things to consider are as follow:
- Amount of Detail in your image
- The amount of colors used in design
- The minimum sizing that letters and detail can be stitched(Thread is 0.4mm thick smallest needle is 0.65mm thick)
- The amount of colors that are blending may have to be reduced
- The amount of overlay-stitching that needs to be done
- The amount of space you have on item for embroidery
- Is it possible to re-size the design
- The Actual measurements (scaling) that the end product need to be.
- The limited colors you have available in threads (they cant be mixed like paints)
- Will your item you chose be able to be stitched on ( is it possible to place in a hoop that can fit the design)
All these above are just the most common questions that need to be answered to do embroidery on items.
Finalizing and sample
After the digitizing has been done the correct thread colors need to be specified or picked by client and a sample might be requested to be stitched on a sample cloth (at extra cost to the client on bigger designs). any Changes to the design after the client has approved might also be at extra costs unless it is just a simple color change(T&C’s apply)
Patches and Applique
For patches you cant just stitch a picture on cloth and cut it out and then call it a patch, that said patch will start unraveling and disintegrating over time unless you have a secure border around said design. Due to it needing a border it usually costs a little more to do a patch, but there are many ways to attach said patch ass well. You van have it as an Iron on badge/patch, it can be made as a sew on patch or it can be made as an applique patch directly onto item.
Applique is ornamental needlework in which pieces or patches of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. It is commonly used as decoration, especially on garments. The technique is accomplished either by hand stitching or machine. As described by Wikipedia.
